San Luis Obispo vs Kern County, March 27 2004
Author: Lief
Date submitted: March 28, 2004
San Luis Obispo found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard for the first time this year yesterday in Bakersfield, taking a hammering at the hands of Kern County to the tune of 50-0. It was a day of firsts for the team, but none of them were anything to be proud of: first time 50 points had been conceded; first time held scoreless.
San Luis were well aware of the game plan Kern were going to use, and it came to fruition with the Tuskers forward pack running rampant for virtually the entire eighty minutes. Kern prop Jason Matzke was dominant in the loose, as were the entire pack.
The day actually started well for the SLO boys, as a succession of penalties drove the Kern XV into their own half, but no points came of it. From about the 15 minute mark, the Kern team turned the screws and SLO literally didn't have a sniff of the tryline until 5 minutes from fulltime.
Paddy Sherlock was valiant on the wing, tackling and running strongly all game and was justifiably awarded a one week stay with SLO groupie Madeline. Other players to stand out in a bleak afternoon were AJ Smith, Sean Leamy, and Greg Watson was impressive in lineouts during the first half.
Fortunately, it wasn't a do-or-die game for the SLO team, who will have a mere seven days before facing Kern again. Hopefully the tables can be turned....there's still plenty more rugby left in SLO Town!
