Riverbottom Field, Rural Arroyo Grande—
SLO Rugby upends Orange County 43-14
Defending Southern California Champions, SLO Rugby opened its league season with a trouncing of the Orange County Bucks.
SLO’s Greg Douglass scored the games first try and it appeared the rout was on; however, the Bucks took advantage of SLO mistakes and tied the game at seven. Last year’s first round playoff opponents would remain deadlocked for the next twenty minutes. Three minutes before half, Ian Yungman and Trevor Salman connected for a powerful score that seemed to energize SLO. Hooker Kevin Mealia touched down from the kickoff, and the 'Vanuatu Express' Mackenzie Whippy shook off nervous hands in the first half and scored three tries after the break to ice the win, as SLO rattled off thirty-six unanswered points.
Fullback Lief McKay converted 4 of SLO’s seven touchdowns.
In the second match won by the Bucks 32-24, SLO’s Ben Green and Charles Bloom provided the scoring punch for the developmental side.
