Rugby is a winter sport. Preseason games usually take place in November and December. Regular league typically runs January through April, with playoff games spilling into May.

Yes. Each week we play two games- the first and second sides. As a general rule, the first side comprises more experienced players, and the second side comprises new players with a handful of older players to mentor the rookies. A basic philosophy of the team is IF YOU PRACTICE, YOU PLAY.

The team caters to the whole county, and we currently have players on the roster from Lompoc, Morro Bay, Cambria, Templeton, Atascadero and more.

No. One of the great things about rugby is that there is a position on the field for practically every body size and type. It's not so much how big you are, but how big you PLAY. It is a misconception that you need to be over 6 feet tall and bench 300lbs to succeed. You just need to have plenty of heart.

The only essential equipment is a pair of cleats, team socks, and black shorts. There are specialist rugby cleats available, but many players wear soccer cleats.
A mouthguard is recommended but not required.
The club has team sets of jerseys for games.

Our home field is Riverbottom Field in Arroyo Grande.
Away games are generally in the greater Los Angeles area. We also travel to Bakersfield, Santa Barbara, and occasionally Orange County and San Diego.

Yes. San Luis Obispo Rugby Club is a registered non-profit organisation. We rely on registration dues to provide any services to players. Your dues go toward many things, including:
Lights for night training;
Buying new jerseys;
Southern California Rugby Union membership;
Post game parties
etc.....
Last season registration was $150.00. There are discounts for students, and payment plans can be arranged.

Yes. We almost always have rookies at training, many of whom have no inkling of the game before they come. You won't be alone on your learning curve!

During the season we train 2 nights a week for 2 hours each session.
We play on Saturdays (occasionally Sundays), and for away games it is generally a whole day affair.
Players need to commit to training and playing before the season starts. Being part of a team means being a reliable. You would expect the same of your team-mates.

SLO Rugby prides itself on being great hosts to visiting teams. After every game there is a party for both teams, where a good time is had by all.
Rugby is traditionally a very social sport, and it is customary for teams to get together after a tough match and eat, drink, sing and generally be merry.

In San Luis Obispo, Bello's Sports on Monterey Street are the best bet. Some people wear soccer cleats, and any sports store carries those.
